La demencia con cuerpos de Lewy es una enfermedad con una gran heterogeneidad clínica en la que tanto los síntomas como la evolución pueden diferir ampliamente entre pacientes. Esta heterogeneidad clínica está ligada a la gran variabilidad neuropatológica encontrada en autopsia. La Unidad de Memoria del Hospital Sant Pau es pionera en la publicación del primer estudio en el que se describen subtipos clínicos bien diferenciados dentro de la demencia con cuerpos de Lewy. El estudio, titulado Clinical subtypes in dementia with Lewy bodies based on its initial clinical presentation ha sido publicado recientemente en la revista internacional Journal of Alzheimer´s Disease.
