Un estudio publicado hoy en «Journal of Experimental Medicine» sugiere que las terapias de reemplazo de nicotina pueden no ser estrategias adecuadas para los pacientes con cáncer de pulmón que intentan dejar de fumar
Investigadores de EE.UU. han descubierto que la nicotina promueve la propagación de las células de cáncer de pulmón al cerebro, donde pueden formar tumores metastásicos mortales. El estudio sugiere que las terapias de reemplazo de nicotina pueden no ser estrategias adecuadas para los pacientes con cáncer de pulmón que intentan dejar de fumar.
Además, los investigadores muestran que un fármaco natural –partenolida– bloquea la metástasis cerebral inducida por nicotina en ratones, lo que sugiere una posible opción terapéutica en humanos.
El 40% de las personas que tienen el tipo más común de cáncer de pulmón puede desarrollar tumores cerebrales metastásicos, con un tiempo de supervivencia promedio de por debajo de los seis meses.
Sin embargo, no se entiende por qué el cáncer de pulmón no microcítico, menos común, se extiende tan a menudo al cerebro.
Ahora, los científicos de la Escuela de Medicina de Wake Forest (EE.UU.) han descubierto que la nicotina, un compuesto químico no cancerígeno que se encuentra en el tabaco, facilita la propagación o metástasis de las células de cáncer de pulmón al cerebro.
